A FLAG enthusiast has put forward his p proposals for one for Grimsby. Charlie Marshall from Laceby has created prototypes which showcase his love for his hometown.

He hopes that Grimsby will hold a v vote to choose an official flag, and one of his designs could be flying from a flag pole above the town hall.

Charlie, 19, said: “Ever since I was litt tle, I’ve been a vexillologist, as people w who study flags are called. In my research I noticed most towns and cities had a flag, but not Grimsby.

“I love the town and will probably be a lifelong resident here, so I wanted to come up with something to represent it. “I knew it had to include black and white to represent Grimsby Town Football Club, as that’s a huge part of the town’s culture. I’ve also incorporated the colour blue and fishing trawlers in to some to represent its heritage.

“For a flag to be adopted officially, there have to be a few designs shortlisted and then the people of the town simply vote for their favourite. This is then recorded with the Flag Institute, which manages them.”

Charlie designed the flags using picture editing software, which he learned specifically for it.

“I first became interested in flags when I was in hospital when I was a young, and started making them out of Lego blocks,” he said.

“I’ve got more serious about it and have spent time researching the flags of different countries and states of the world.

“My personal favourite is the flag of Bhutan, which is split into orange and red with a white dragon in the middle. “Of the ones I’ve created, my favourite incorporates Grimsby’s coat of arms with the three boars’ heads. Other people really like the ones with the trawler.” The county of Lincolnshire adopted its flag in 2005 after a thousands of people participated in a public vote. Grimsby has a coat of arms dating back from the 1500s, showing three boar heads, possibly due to the Mayor’s right to hunt boar in Bradley Woods.

Cleethorpes also doesn’t have a flag, which could be a future project for keen vexillologists.
