NEW CCTV cameras for Cleethorpes will help curb a rising tide of vandalism, say councillors.

One of the new waste bins on Alexandra Road was destroyed when it was set alight in the early hours of Thursday.

It follows an arson attack on a bench on Cleethorpes High Street earlier in the summer. Business leaders and councillors say they are fed up with graffiti and vandalism on the streets of the resort which is welcoming increasing numbers of visitors during the coronavirus lockdown. Ward councillors for Croft Baker Bob Callison and Oliver Freeston said businesses and visitors need to do more to stop vandalism by reporting it to police. “This is the second arson attack on our streets. We have to stop it because it is damaging the reputation of the resort as a family-friendly place to visit,” said Councillor Callison.

He added: “When bins are set alight it sends up a lot of toxic fumes. As rate payers we all end up paying for them to be replaced.

“The new bins look fantastic. But people need to look out and report

anything suspicious they see.

“The new CCTV cameras we are getting soon will be able to pick people out. These are part of a £100,000 system coming to Cleethorpes.” Councillor Callison said the position of the cameras had yet to be decided. But he recommended new ones on St Peter’s Avenue should span the main road rather than being obscured by branches of trees. Councillor Freeston said: “For me it is about strong enforcement. This is criminal damage.

We have written to Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers to lobby the Government for stronger deterrents. We are big advocates of stronger punishments. People must learn to fear the consequences because as it is they are getting away with it.”
