MAN LEFT IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN AFTER DENTAL TREATMENT

ENGINEER RECEIVES £9,000 IN OUT-OF-COURT SETTLEMENT FOLLOWING ROOT CANAL WORK

AN engineer says he was left in excruciating pain and “feeling disfigured” after root canal treatment. Ray Edwards, 34, has received £9,000 in an out-of-court settlement following the treatment by MyDentist of Kingsway, Cleethorpes, although they did not admit liability. They have, however, apologised for the “below standard care”. Ray has been told by another dentist that he now requires extensive corrective treatment and says he feels like he was left disfigured. He underwent a number of procedures at MyDentist between April and May 2018.

“I had been having orthodontic treatment at the practice. But I started suffering from toothache and was told I needed fillings on a number of teeth,” Ray, a maintenance engineer from Grimsby, said.

“I went in April 2018 to have the treatment and thought it would be fairly routine. People have fillings all the time, don’t they? I thought my toothache would be resolved.

“The pain at the appointment itself was indescribable.

I wasn’t given any anaesthetic or anything. I was just relieved when it was over, and thought that would be the end of it. “However, when I got home, I was still in pain. I just knew something wasn’t right.” Ray returned to the Cleethorpes practice within weeks.

“A couple of weeks later I told the dentist I was still in pain. They told me I needed root canal treatment,” he said.

“I thought everything had been taken care of at a previous appointment. Nevertheless, I trusted the advice and let the dentist go ahead with what they were recommending. “Despite all this treatment my toothache didn’t stop. It was getting ridiculous, so I made an appointment with a new dentist.” He says he was told the treatment needed to be repeated. “It was a shock and it felt like I had been wasting my time on all the visits and treatments I’d had previously.”

Ray contacted The Dental Law Partnership.

The firm say that analysis of his dental records revealed that the original dentist had failed to provide adequate treatment to a number of Mr Edward’s teeth.

He will require repeat root canal treatment and to have crowns placed.

Ray said: “It’s unbelievable really. I have been in so much pain. I will also need to spend many more hours in the dentist’s chair because the dentist did such a bad job. “I’m 34 years old and I feel like I’ve been left disfigured and am selfconscious. It’s definitely made me feel wary whenever I visit the dentist now.”

Nicholas Hampson, of the Dental Law Partnership, said: “The distress and pain our client has experienced was completely unnecessary.

“If the dentist had carried out adequate treatment in the first place, his problems could have been avoided.” Ray received an out-of-court payment of £9,000 earlier this year. The MyDentist practice did not admit liability, but have apologised to him for the experience. A spokesperson for MyDentist told the Grimsby Telegraph: “We would like to apologise for the experience Mr Edwards has had. This falls significantly below the standards of care that all patients should expect.”
