THE BOYS ARE BACK FOR TOWN

MARINERS ALL SET TRAINING RETURN

- By JAMES FINDLATER james.findlater@reachplc.com @JamieFin_

GRIMSBY Town are due to return to training next Wednesday after postponing three of their fixtures, chairman Philip Day has revealed. Having called off their clash with Cheltenham last weekend following Jock Curran’s positive test for coronavirus, the Mariners’ subsequent fixtures against Bradford and Hull City were also postponed, with the entire squad in self-isolation. Therefore, Town’s next game will be away at Bolton Wanderers on October 10, with Ian Holloway’s side set to be back in training three days ahead of the League Two clash. Mr Day had expressed his hope that the Mariners would be able to return to action before then, with confusion reigning as to why Town were out of action while other sides returning positive tests played on.

“We hoped there would be a chance, the problem was there was a lot of conflicting information and advice flying around, and we just needed to clarify that,” Mr Day said.

“At the end of the day, the clarification as to when we can start training again only came in on Wednesday morning.

“We start training again next Wednesday. Bradford and Hull are off, and we’re speaking to those clubs with regard to rearranging those fixtures, and of course the Cheltenham fixture.

“If we can get back training again on Wednesday, then we’ll be ready to go on Saturday at Bolton.”

On making the decision to postpone the Bradford and Hull fixtures,

Mr Day added: “At the end of the day, we had one priority, and one priority only, and that was to ensure the health and wellbeing and safety of our players and staff, and on Saturday the Cheltenham players and staff, and of course their families. “Our first reaction was to test everyone on Friday and get the test results. If everyone was clear, then there would be no problem.

“We were advised it would be pointless carrying out tests on Friday because it would be within the incubation period.”
