MANY TOP ANGLERS STRUGGLED TO CATCH

THE 2020 Grimsby and District Club Championships was won in style by Jubilee Angling Club.

The prestigious event was held at Lindholme Lakes, between Scunthorpe and Doncaster, under strict social-distancing guidelines and other Covid-19 regulations. It was a very windy and cold day and the water temperature had dropped, which put the fish off. The anglers found it very hard-going and bites were at a premium. Darren Lawton, fishing on Bonsai Lake, was the top individual on the day with a creditable 105lb.

This was way in front of anyone else.

Anglers on many of the lakes were just praying for a bite. Beeches Lake did fish well and most of the anglers had a decent day there. Well-respected angler Paul Mountford, fishing for the NATS A, struggled to catch 4lb from Willows lake - this showed just how hard the fishing was. He was not on his own, several anglers did not even get a bite and they didn’t weigh in.

It was also a story of anglers losing fish that cost them vital points. One competitor lost more than most when his keep net disappeared into the water at the end of the match! After the weigh-in, it was up to Tim Chapman and myself to sort out the sheets. Tensions were high. It was going to be a very close call. But at the end of the day it was Jubilee A,who showed their strength - and all their practising had paid off. They claimed the bragging rights with 32 points.

Ultimate Titans A claimed a welldeserved second.

Then the fun and games started. On the day, it seemed Carr Lane came third, with a tie for fourth and that was decided on overall team weight - giving Nats A fourth place. But the following morning an error in the totalling of points was discovered – and it looked as though Jubilee B would claim third place. However, after many checks, it was decided that Carr Lane were in fact third and Jubilee with a slightly lower weight total, came fourth. Credit must go to Carr Lane - this was a club in dire straits last season and was in danger of folding. With the tremendous work of Wayne Stevens, Mark Godley and Snowy Bennett the club has survived - and are now getting back to full strength. A third place for the club is a fantastic effort.

A big thanks must go to Tim Chapman and Jon Smith for organising and Ultimate Direct for their continuing support - the anglers were very grateful for their vouchers received on the day. Also the staff at Lindholme for making sure the day went off very well.

The match will be there again next year.
