WANT TO SEE SEALS? YOU MAY NEED TO BOOK!

CHANGES AT DONNA NOOK DUE TO CORONAVIRUS

IF you’re thinking of going to see the seals at Donna Nook this year then be prepared for some changes as Covid restrictions mean a booking system is likely.

Donna Nook is famously home to a colony of grey seals who come to Lincolnshire beaches during the winter months to breed.

The seal viewing area is usually open from late October until December and attracts large numbers of visitors hoping to see the seals and their pups. The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust said: “We are in discussions with various authorities working out the logistics of the seal season at Donna Nook.

“If we are able to go ahead, it will almost certainly mean a booking system and we will make an announcement as soon as possible.” Britain is home to about 40 per cent of the world’s population of grey seals and Donna Nook has become one of the most important sites in the country. Seals have been visiting Lincolnshire’s beaches since the early 1970s and spend the majority of their year out at sea or on distant sandbanks, only visiting the shore to breed. One of the main attractions is of course the seal pups who are born with their stark white coats and spend two to three weeks suckling from their mothers on the beaches.

The pups will be abandoned by their mother who will mate again before leaving the beach, only then will the deserted pups shed their white coats and take to the sea to find food.

The Donna Nook reserve is made up of sand dunes, slacks and inter-tidal areas and has features such as toilets and an information centre as well as accessible routes for disabled people. If you’re considering visiting this year, keep an eye on the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website for the latest updates.
