Anglers battle against wet and wild conditions

- By TONY BURMAN a.burman@ntlworld.com

FREEZERTECH Angling Club fished a match on the River Don at Conisbrough, on pegs 42 to 65. The match was fished in torrential rain and the river rose six inches during the match.

The winner was Keith Robinson. Fishing off peg 42, he fished the pole with hemp and tares to end the match with 9lb 13oz of roach. Second place went to Graham Batchelor. Fishing off peg 65, he fished the ground bait feeder and caught one decent bream and the rest of his catch were roach, ending the match with 9lb 8oz.

In third place was Steve Baker. Fishing off peg 61, he fished the pole and stick float with hemp and caster and caught mainly roach for a weight of 7lb 12oz.

Novartis Angling Club fished at Lindholme on Benny’s Lake. It was a wet and wild day but this did not deter the anglers. Jon Smith fished the pole shallow and he had a good day with a winning total of 131lb. Then it was Alex Burns again on the pole, he had 109.8lb. Andy Smith decided to go on the method feeder, and he had 89.11lb.

It was a sad day for Dave Ruffles - someone decided to take his Shimano Beastmaster pole out of his car while he was packing his tackle away. So be careful when you are packing your tackle away - always keep an eye out.

Carr Lane Angling Club fished on the Hollywood Bowl part part of the Messingham Sands complex. They had a poor turnout, but this gave the anglers who were fishing a massive advantage as it gave them plenty of room. Chris Parker made good use of this with a fantastic weight of 151lb. Second was Mark Godley, who just missed out of the magic 100lb weight with 99.15lb. Third was Pete Shreeve with 85lb. Finally, I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Crosskill, representing of Peter Clayton’s fishery, hand over a cheque for £1,000 to Katie from the Health Tree Foundation - the charity part of our local NHS. This was raised from a recent match held at the fishery. This is fantastic work from the fishery, and especially Steve who organised the event and made sure it went off smoothly.
