Christmas lights switch-on
... BUT THE FESTIVE DISPLAY WILL STILL SHINE BRIGHT
THE annual Christmas lights switchon in Grimsby and Cleethorpes has been cancelled this year due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus pandemic and rules on mass gatherings.
While the Christmas lights will still be put up, there will be no public event to mark turning them on. The Visitor Economy, Services & Retail group (VESR) who organise Grimsby’s switch-on each year have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event in order to ensure the safety of those visiting and taking part.
Liz Parry, Chair of the VESR group, said: “This has not been an easy decision to make, but the health of our residents, visitors, retailers and businesses is of great importance to us.
“We understand that a lot of people will be disappointed by our decision, but safety has to be our number one priority.
“We are currently working hard to see how we can bring some festive spirit i it t to th the t town centre t th through some smaller activities that will help the local economy and bring the community together. More details of this will be announced soon.”
Councillor Callum Procter, portfolio holder for tourism, heritage and culture, added: “It’s a great shame that such a popular event in the heart of Grimsby will have to be cancelled, but this is the right decision to keep everyone safe during these times.
“Despite having no physical event this year, the lights will still shine bright for everyone to enjoy and get into the festive spirit.”
Cleethorpes will also not be hosting a lights switch-on event this year.
