FACE coverings are now mandatory in certain workplace settings in Scotland but should they be in England too?

In September, it became law for staff in retail, leisure and hospitality settings to wear a face covering, but it does not apply to office settings where there is no contact with customers, with employers simply asked to judge their use “on a case by case basis”.

The new rules in Scotland take this extra step with those north of the border expected to wear masks when in a workplace canteen, when entering or leaving the canteen, or when going to the bathroom.

Telegraph readers have given their views on whether or not they felt masks at work should become the norm, especially as cases rise across northern Lincolnshire.

Many people say a common sense

approach is needed, particularly for the type of workplace.

Natalie Koppaberg said: “Depends on the work places. Like kitchens, yes, people want hygiene to a max in kitchens but when you’re in those kitchens for hours in the heat, in the uniform with a mask on as well, it can get a bit much for one human.” Paul Jackson said: “I’m for face coverings but not within all work places. If you are in close contact with others then, yes, maybe. If you are two metres or more apart and have dividers up then no. It depends on the environment.”

Coreen Penheiro-Wharton said: “Yes, it’s easy to forget safety in an office environment.

“Face masks should be compulsory the minute you step into buildings or public transport.”
