TWO more people have died in hospital after contracting coronavirus – making the last seven days the worst week for covid deaths in three months. Both patients passed away on Saturday, October 17, at hospitals run by the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

Five patients have now died in the last seven days, including two on Tuesday and one on Thursday.

It brings the total number of deaths in hospitals in Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole to 127.

Forty-two people are now being treated in hospital – up 10 from just five days ago.

This is the highest level so far during the coronavirus second wave.

The NHS trust, which doesn’t release information on which hospital deaths occur at, is seeing a build-up of patients as cases rise in the local area. North East Lincolnshire officials have reported that the level of new cases is doubling every six days, and vulnerable elderly people are being increasingly affected by the virus.

Cases now stand at 1,007 in North East Lincolnshire and 1,594 in North Lincolnshire after another surge in cases over the weekend. Workplaces and schools are being increasingly affected by the spread of the virus, with employees and pupils regularly being told to self-isolate after new cases are confirmed.

More areas of the country are being added to the ‘high risk’ tier of the Covid alert system, with London, Essex and York being moved up over the weekend.

Northern Lincolnshire is currently in the ‘medium risk’ tier, but public health officials have warned that action is needed to prevent the continued spread.

Wales yesterday announced a ‘short circuit breaker’ lockdown to stop the escalation, with people told to stay at home except for essential journeys.
