P&O Ferries has issued a statement as the Pride of Hull remains stranded in the River Humber following a fire.

The blaze broke out in the engine room on Tuesday, with the vessel losing engine power just off Immingham with 260 people on board. The fire broke out shortly after the ship set sail from Hull at 8.30pm on October 20 en route to Rotterdam.

The ferry was due to arrive in the Dutch city at 8.30am on Wednesday, but as of 9.30am yesterday it was still located near Immingham. All crew and 260 people were reported as safe onboard and passengers disembarked the vessel last night.

P&O said that at no point were any passengers in danger and the fire was extinguished by the ship’s crew.

As a precaution, the vessel will now return to port in Hull and damage to the engine room will be assessed, Associated British Ports confirmed.

A spokesman for P&O Ferries said: “(On Tuesday) there was a fire which was safely extinguished by the ship’s crew in one of the engine rooms of the Pride of Hull. “There were no injuries and at no point was any passenger in danger. As a precaution, the ship will return to the berth in Hull and the damage will be assessed.”

ABP say they will be assisting with the Pride of Hull’s return to port as soon as possible:

A spokesperson said “ABP responded (on Tuesday night) to an incident of a fire in the engine room on the P&O vessel the Pride of Hull.

“We continue to liaise with and support the ship and will be assisting in her safe return to the Port of Hull as soon as possible.”

No other vessels were affected by the fire.
