‘BLAST FROM BOSS HELPED SPARK US UP’

MAX WRIGHT REVEALS HOW SOME HOME TRUTHS FROM HOLLOWAY DID THE TRICK

MAX Wright revealed that a rocket from Ian Holloway revved the players up and helped to send Grimsby Town on their way to a deserved midweek victory. Wright netted the winner for the Mariners in a 2-1 triumph over League Two rivals Crawley. He said that Holloway had ‘spoken a lot of truths’ to several players in the days before the game in a bid to get them to increase their work-rate.

“We needed a win - but whenever a team loses it always needs a win the following game,” Wright told the Grimsby Telegraph.

“We’re really happy with it, not just the win but with the performance.

“We played really well at times - like a proper footballing team. “There were a lot of truths spoken in the build-up. The gaffer said we had not been working hard enough and not putting enough in - and I think he was right.

“He’s given it to a lot of the lads over the past couple of weeks, including myself when I’ve not been good enough, but that’s absolutely fair.

“It just shows when he does give it to you and sometimes says what you don’t want to hear, you get a performance like that where everyone works really hard.”

Wright is delighted to have contributed so heavily to the result, and is hoping his injuries are now behind him this season. “It was a good ball into the box and I was really pleased to get my goal - hopefully I can kick on now with some more goals. “That’s going to raise my spirits a lot. I have been injured for a long time this season, and my plan at the start was to play as many games as I could for the club, and improve my character and play style. The injuries halted it a lot which has been a bit of a nightmare but I’ve been working hard and taking a lot of things on board when I have not been in the team.

“It has not been easy being injured, but I have overcome it and hopefully I’ll get plenty more games.”

Wright praised Town’s other goalscorer, Matt Green, who has been the target for critics on social media this season, with some highlighting his lack of goals so far this term.

“I am good friends with Greeny and I am so happy for him. It was a great touch and a great finish, it was just what he needed,” said Wright.

“The people on Twitter giving him stick - why would he listen to them? They are not football managers. The only people he needs to listen to is Ian Holloway and Ben Davies. That’s it. That’s all he needs to do.”
