A MAN who “tried to silence” a woman before throwing her to the ground outside an Immingham pub has been jailed.

Karl Wright, 29, of Lydford Grove in Immingham, started the incident at the Pelham Hotel on July 19 this year by putting his hand over the woman’s mouth “silencing” her.

The woman then retaliated and pushed Wright away before he tried to put his hand over her mouth again when she struck out at him - attempting to punch him but missing. CCTV played to Grimsby Crown Court on Friday showed the incident carrying on in the pub’s car park. Prosecuting, Daniel Penman, said: “The CCTV footage shows them walking out of the pub and him throwing her to the floor.

“The woman was left with a laceration to her face, a black eye and bruising to her lip.”

Wright was soon arrested, although he had already attempted to evade justice.

Mr Penman said: “Her phone showed that he [Wright] had sent a number of messages to her saying to tell the police that he pushed her and she landed on a glass and that it wasn’t done on purpose.”

The court heard Wright has 17 previous convictions for crimes including an assault on a police officer, affray and wounding.

Mitigating, Andrew Bailey, told the court that the woman accepted she had tried to punch Wright and he had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on that basis, and on the basis that she had thrown her drink at him when they left the pub. Mr Bailey said: “He says that he believed she would hit him with the glass and although he didn’t punch her, he did grab her and throw her to the ground.

“He accepts he caused her injuries when she hit the ground.”

Judge Ahmed Nadim jailed Wright for ten months for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and told him: “The complainant didn’t give evidence or support the prosecution that you have been the subject of but those are the circumstances that this follows.

“In order to silence her you put your hand over her mouth and she pushed you back and delivered a punch but the evidence doesn’t make it clear as to whether that connected or not. “Thereafter you went outside. You had been drinking at that time. You then chose, rather foolishly, to interfere with the evidence you thought may be relied upon and sent a number of messages to her.”
