Seal viewing area to stay shut for rest of the pupping season

THE seal viewing area at Donna Nook will be closed for the rest of the pupping season.

On Wednesday, December 2, Lincolnshire will be placed into Tier 3 of coronavirus lockdown conditions. And to help stop the spread of the virus and to keep staff, volunteers, the local community and the seals safe, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will be keeping the seal viewing area closed.

They are asking that everyone follows Government guidelines and avoids visiting Donna Nook. They thanked the public for the messages of support and interest in the seal colony but wanted to reiterate the importance of not visiting the seals while Lincolnshire is in Tier 3. Head of Reserves at the Trust, Dave Bromwich, said: “We’re asking people to continue to respect the guidelines and not travel to Donna Nook.

“Not only is there an obvious risk to visitors, staff and our volunteers but also a potential impact on the seals as they have become accustomed to the quieter viewing area. “We’d like to thank everyone for their continued support, kind messages on our Facebook page and donations to the Seal Appeal. “Although it’s been a different year for us all, we’re still here year-round keeping an eye on the colony, maintaining the nature reserve and managing the tides so knowing we’ve got your support makes the world of difference.”

Staff will continue to be present on site to monitor the colony and will continue sharing a weekly ‘pupdate’ and photos of the seals on their Facebook page.

The Trust has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and welcome any donations to the seal appeal to help them keep protecting the seals and their important habitat.
