Hendrie nets - but it’s not enough as players fail to shine yet again

MARKS OUT OF TEN AS MARINERS CLOCK UP ANOTHER DEFEAT

-

DESPITE Grimsby Town’s best efforts, they couldn’t claim anything from their travels to Colchester United.

The Mariners suffered a 2-1 defeat in Essex, despite an abundance of chances as they took the fight to their hosts late on.

Instead, it was the U’s that claimed their first win in four league games, with goals from Tommy Smith and Callum Harriott either side of Luke Hendrie’s first half equaliser.

James Findlater shares his player ratings from Colchester...

James McKeown: Looked like he might have been caught by surprise by the first as it trickled in agonisingly. Severely let down by those in front of him for the winner 5/10 Luke Hendrie: On the scoresheet for the second time in a week - some of his team-mates may need to start taking advice from him to improve their fortunes in front of goal 6/10 Luke Waterfall: A desperate lunge couldn’t prevent Smith from scoring the opener. Spurned a golden opportunity to bring Town back level in the second half as he poked over the bar 5/10

Mattie Pollock: Given a harsh booking very early on, which put him on a tightrope. His passing from the back was a little bit off at times as Town looked to build up a head of steam 5/10

Danny Preston: Showed decent drive down the left-hand side, but was dealt a difficult lesson in defending for Colchester’s second when he should have showed Harriott onto the outside 5/10

Danny Rose: Did his usual work in front of the back four and kept things moving. Spurned a great opportunity as he sliced wide in search of the second equaliser 5/10

Elliott Hewitt: Broke up play and got things moving pretty well in the first half. Didn’t quite look as effective after the break 5/10

Kyle Bennett: To be fair to him, he was certainly one of the brightest sparks for Town going forward, although he didn’t really cover himself in glory for that last goal 6/10 Owura Edwards: As usual, looked a threat on the ball. Perhaps guilty of spending too much time on the ball though - his manager certainly seemed frustrated by his decisionmaking 6/10

Sean Scannell: A real shame to see him go off given his recent form. Showed a few glimpses of that here, including an almost perfect through ball for Edwards 5/10

Owen Windsor: Got much more involved as the game wore on. Should have scored in the chance before Town equalised - there’s talent there, but he could do with something to get him firing again 5/10

From the bench

George Williams (Scannell 45+4): Called into action after Scannell’s injury, but didn’t quite have the desired effect 4/10

Montel Gibson (Bennett 77): Did well after coming on, setting up a few chances which his team-mates should have perhaps done better with 6/10

Terry Taylor (Pollock 82): Couldn’t make a telling impact late on.

Not used: Battersby, Idehen, Clifton, Starbuck.
