New daily Covid cases could drop to single figures before Christmas

-

MEASURES to prevent the spread of coronavirus in northern Lincolnshire are having an impact with the prospect of single figure cases next week.

The downward trend in reports of new cases has continued over the past 24 hours.

In North East Lincolnshire there were 13 new cases reported, with a notable decline from 18 at the start of the week and 15 the following day. The further drop to 13 is a clear sign that the area is recovering from a significant second wave of the coronavirus.

It brings the total number of cases to 5,623 and places the borough 114th in England with with 114.1 cases per 100,000 population.

Cases in the Scunthorpe area are proving more stubborn with the daily caes reported standing at 46, taking the North Lincolnshire total to 5,356.

North Lincolnshire is 95th in the table of England authorities with a Covid rate of 144.5 cases per 100,000 population.

It is little comfort to under pressure NHS staff who face a struggle keeping the virus at bay. Yesterday it was reported there are still acutely ill people in hospitals in our region.

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole

NHS Foundation Trust said there were 131 patients in hospital, with 46 at Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, 78 at Scunthorpe General and seven at Goole yesterday. Of these, three are in ICU at Scunthorpe.

The hospital figures reinforce the appeal from nursing staff who made emotional pleas for people not to drop their guard against the virus and keep to the social distancing discipline. The simple message is wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, keep a face covering on and give people space to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Jenny Harrison, Specialist Respiratory Nurse at the hospital said: “By not following the guidance, you’re risking infecting someone for who Covid may be life threatening.

“Not only that, but please think of the potential knock-on effect to hospital staff who have to self-isolate because they or someone they live with has tested positive.” Meanwhile the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust has reported another Covid-19 death, which happened on Monday.
