A TOTAL of 94 new coronavirus cases have been reported in northern Lincolnshire.

The latest figures show 40 people in North East Lincolnshire and 54 in North Lincolnshire tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. It compares to Friday’s 77 cases across the regions, to Saturday’s 166, and Sunday’s 67.

The sharp spike on Saturday was one of the highest daily totals in recent months.

It is feared the region could see a similar spike in coming weeks, as the new Covid variant continues to spread rapidly across England. The figures, published by the Government on Monday afternoon, place North East Lincolnshire’s rate per 100,000 resident population at 104.4.

There has been a 63.5 per cent increase in coronavirus cases across North East Lincolnshire in the past seven days.

This compares to North Lincolnshire’s figures which shows its rate of infection at 208.4, after an increase of 34.5 per cent contacted the virus within the same timeframe.

It comes as another three people with coronavirus sadly lost their lives in local hospitals over the weekend. This takes the total number of northern Lincolnshire deaths since the start of the year to seven.

The overall number since the start of the pandemic is now 337. Two of the patients with Covid died on Saturday, January 2, and another passed away yesterday (Sunday, January 3).

The number of patients being treated by the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust has remained steady for the last week.

There are now 118, with six patients in intensive care units – 47 of the patients are being treated in Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, and 69 in Scunthorpe General Hospital. Another two are in Goole hospital.

The case numbers are for the seven days up to December 30.
