THE Prime Minister has announced a third national lockdown for England – but will it work in northern Lincolnshire?

Boris Johnson revealed tougher restrictions across the country when addressing the nation on Monday night.

The Government says: “You must stay at home. The single most important action we can all take is to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.

“You should follow this guidance immediately. The law will be updated to reflect these new rules.” Under the new rules, which become law on Wednesday, people can only leave their homes for a handful of reasons.

They include:

■ shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person

■ go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home

■ exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person, this should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.

■ meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one

■ seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)

■ attend education or childcare - for those eligible

Upon hearing the news, the people of Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe voiced their opinions – with some sayings “it’s about time” while others believe “lockdown won’t work”.

Tracey Davidson said: “I agree with lockdown - too many people are not sticking to rules and people are passing Covid to other people’s loved ones.

“People in homes are not getting families to visit them which means those in care homes are suffering with not getting family hugs, when people go out hugging and going home.

“I wouldn’t want my mum catching Covid and if anything happens I can’t go and see her or hold her

hand. Stay safe people, wear a mask and keep your family safe.” In agreement, Michelle Gordon said: “Well, if everyone had followed the basic rules, not just 50 per cent of us, we wouldn’t be in this situation. “They should have also done the vaccine differently - all health staff, not over 80s. Should have been all the clinically vulnerable.” Jacqueline Davina Usher believes all key workers should receive the vaccine as a priority.

She said: “They are the ones in contact with the most people, shop workers and factory workers come in to contact with people in their hundreds every single day and cannot stay at home and shield like the elderly can.

“I know the elderly have less chance of surviving it but they have less chance of passing it on.” However, Joy Marlborough believes the Government’s handling of the pandemic has been “absolutely ridiculous”.

She said: “Another lockdown is not going to help at all. This clown is destroying this country.” Susan Barss said: “It wouldn’t matter who was running the country because our generation has never had to deal with anything like this. “Trial and error by any Government would be shouted down by a lot of people so instead of moaning about it get on with it.

“Just look around at all the idiots who have broken rules to suit themselves and their pockets.”
