A blatant disregard of rules by so-called ‘elite’

- Alan Charlish, Laceby Road, Grimsby.

OVER the weekend our TV screens have shown many images of the football and rugby matches taking place across the UK. Whilst pubs, clubs, restaurants and businesses have been forced to close their doors, many of them for the last time as they can’t possibly survive, the so called “elite sports” have been allowed to continue. There are individuals from at least 22 separate households mixing and on top of that there are the match officials and all of the support staff who travel with them.

After the match we see the players, officials and others all celebrating their victories in the changing rooms, not a mask between them.

They are seen hugging and kissing with no attempt whatsoever to social distance. They have travelled the length and breadth of the country on coaches to take part in these matches.

While the rest of us are having to self isolate, not mix with anyone from another household, not allowed to travel, even to an exercise site outside of our own area, there are footballers apparently allowed to break just about every one of the lockdown rules. One has to question why?

Footballers certainly cannot be classed as essential workers. There seem to be rules for the majority that don’t have to be observed by a so called “elite” minority group.

I realise that there is not just the game itself, there is also a multimillion pound gambling industry thriving on the outcome of these games, but surely no one can justify the risks involved, especially when Matt Hancock is now talking about closing nurseries and introducing even further restrictions on us mere mortals? How can the government expect us to take the lockdown seriously when there is such a blatant disregard of the rules?
