COFFEE SHOP EXPECTED TO CREATE 20 JOBS

A BRAND new Costa drive-thru on Birchin Way is starting to take shape. The building, which is expected to have both a Costa Coffee and a Subway store inside, seems to be nearing completion after building started in mid-2020.

The signage and drive-thru features are now in place, with the focus now moving to the store’s interior, with carpeting and other items being spotted outside the coffee shop last Thursday afternoon. Outdoor furniture, which will be key for customers in the coming months, is already in place, too, as the coffee shop gets ready to open later this year.

Plans for the coffee shop were originally revealed back in August 2019, later being approved by North East Lincolnshire Council in December 2019.

There are already two fast food outlets at Birchin Way, McDonald’s and KFC - a good location next to the

A180 for people either coming into or leaving Grimsby.

This will be the first drive-thru coffee shop to be opened in North East Lincolnshire, and is the third Costa Coffee in the area - with the other two being based in Freshney Place in Grimsby and St Peter’s Avenue in

Cleethorpes.

The nearest st drive-thru coffee fee shop at the moment is Starbucks rbucks at Barnetby Top, p, which opened back in August 2020.

The coffee sh shop is expected to create 20 new jobs in Grimsby. Cost Costa Coffee have been contacted con for further informa information on when the store will open.

CHANGES to household waste collection and recycling have started today with new collection dates and an increase in the type of items that can be recycled.

The collection of the new recycling bins has changed from fortnightly to monthly, with the green standard waste bin being collected every fortnight as normal. The grey and blue recycling bins will be emptied on alternate fortnights.

North East Lincolnshire Council said collection dates were kept the same during deliveries of the new recycling bins as a temporary measure until the roll-out was complete.

The council has sent a new bin day calendar to all affected households in the borough.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “It’s easy to forget when there’s a change to the usual routine, please look out for your friends and neighbours and remind them to put their bin out if they don’t remember.

“This is also a big change for our crews. Most of the rounds have undergone significant alterations following an overhaul to make them as efficient as possible. Please be patient as we all get used to the changes.

“I’d like to thank everyone who is making the effort to reduce their waste and recycle more.”

The council claims that the new rounds are more efficient and will help reduce the time their vehicles are on the roads to keep running costs down. As well as changing the rounds, the council will also take more types of plastic in the grey recycling bin and from today, plastic pots, tubs and trays can go in it.

The council still can’t recycle black plastics and these will continue to go in the green bin.

It is suggested that you can fit more recycling in your bins by flattening cardboard boxes and squashing plastic bottles and drinks cans. Grimsby Live revealed last week that as a result of the changes, some streets will be left without green waste bin collections for three weeks.

Many residents in Scartho whose green bin was due to be emptied on today have found the date now pushed back until March 15.

One householder said: “I’m not really sure why they’ve had to do it that way - surely the green bin collections could just have stayed the same?

“It’s the one that’s the most urgent with the type of waste in there - most people could probably hang on an extra week for their recycling, and that’s going to be monthly anyway, so it wouldn’t make any difference.”

The council has said that it anticipates that as people recycle more and with the introduction of future weekly food waste collections, the need for bigger general household rubbish bins will reduce over time.

By 2035 the Government wants local authorities to only collect 35 per cent of the waste from households as general household rubbish and 65 per cent as recycling.

Under the council’s overhaul of waste and recycling collections, smaller bins for household waste will be phased in gradually. For example, when a damaged bin needs replacing or when bins are delivered to a new build property. The council will not be removing 240 litre green bins from households and replacing them with smaller 180 litre bins.

It is claimed that one of the new recycling bins holds the same amount of recycling as about six of the old recycling boxes.

As a result the new rounds represent an increase of 57 per cent capacity compared to two of the old blue recycling boxes collected fortnightly. The new rounds for plastic, cans and glass represents an increase of 29 per cent compared to amounts the average household previously presented at the kerbside using the boxes. Grimsby and Immingham Community Recycling Centres are open daily from 8am to 6pm for extra household waste and recycling.
