Indecent images of children found on town man’s phone and laptop

‘BY BEHAVING THE WAY YOU DID YOU HAVE LOST YOUR GOOD CHARACTER’ - RECORDER

A GRIMSBY man admitted making indecent images of children when police investigated his vile computer activity.

Daren Cody, 48, of Spratton Court, was arrested after The National Crime Agency alerted Humberside Police to his sickening lust for child pornography.

At Grimsby Crown Court he received a two-year community order and was told he had to attend 30 rehabilitation activity days.

Cody was found with two still images classed at category B images and 61 of lesser category images. Prosecuting Gordon Stables said the defendant had admitted making indecent images of children which were identified in May 2018 when he visited a specified website named in court. In December 2019 police attended at his home and seized his laptop and mobile phone. They were analysed. Mr Stables said the defendant fully admitted viewing indecent images of children. For Cody, Christopher Dickins said his client had never received counselling for his problem and added he had been “reserved and clammed up about it.”

When Cody failed to attend a previous court hearing he was arrested and kept in custody for the hearing at Grimsby Crown Court.

Mr Dickins said the time in custody had given his client “a period of abstinence which has helped him.” Sentencing Cody, Recorder Tahir Khan QC said: “By behaving the way you did you have lost your good character.

“Also you are ordinarily a hard working man and have been in employment consistently throughout your life.

“That persuades me not to impose a sentence of custody . Society is better served by imposing a community order.”

He also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years. He warned Cody not to breach the order and to keep police informed of his whereabouts.

TRIBUTE has been paid to a former District Judge for Grimsby who learned to fly a glider at 72.

A private service will be held at Grimsby Minster for Cyril Lavender, who sadly died at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby, following a heart attack. He was 96.

A memorial service is planned once coronavirus lockdown restrictions are lifted, his widow, Ena told the Grimsby Telegraph.

Born in Enfield in Middlesex, Cyril attended Enfield Grammar School and enlisted in the RAF during the war. His service saw him train as a Spitfire pilot just as the war ended in 1945. He was later posted to work for the intelligence services in French IndoChina, which later became Vietnam. He qualified as a solicitor and worked in Kenya during the Mau-Mau uprising, representing many of the renowned warriors who took part in the colonial struggle against British authorities. In the 1950s he returned to Grimsby where he joined Wilkin Chapman legal firm.

He later served as a registrar and as a District Judge working in the West Midlands and Nottingham.

On his retirement he took up gliding and became a pilot at Kirmington. Cyril was a keen member of the Rotary Club of Immingham and the Gentlemen’s Dining Club which regularly met at The Othello restaurant in Grimsby.

Ena said: “He was always a kind and loving husband. He led a full life and was happy all the time. It was a fulfilling life, so we are trying not to look at the sorrow of losing him as he enjoyed his life greatly.

“There have been so many people who have sent cards describing him as a gentleman. I can’t believe how many have been sent. He was much-liked.” She told how much they enjoyed their caravan holidays when he retired. A private service will be held at the minster from 11am on Wednesday, March 24, which cannot include hymns because of coronavirus restrictions and is limited to only a few friends.

His nephew Professor Peter Lavender is expected to attend along with friends he made as a member of Cleethorpes Yacht Club.

IT is widely discussed how much people are missing the pubs, bars and clubs of the area for the social life they offer at a weekend but maybe less mentioned is the much loved activity of heading for a fry-up the morning after the night before.

There are plenty of brilliant cafes and restaurants that offer just that in normal times but with the current lockdown restrictions expected to be in place until the summer, we’re taking a look at places which deliver right now.

As mentioned in previous roundups this is a selection of the best that are being advertised on the internet – you might know of somewhere that doesn’t appear in the list and you can give them a shout-out in the comments.

So here goes, the best places we know and the best places we could find for a takeaway fry-up right now, in no particular order:

Four Candles

Currently sitting pretty as the number one place to get a breakfast meal in the Grimsby area according to Tripadvisor is Four Candles. Rumours of the cafe’s death turned out to have been greatly exaggerated and they’ve made a triumphant return in lockdown and currently serve takeaway and delivery from 10am until 3pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

They have options for a small and large breakfast featuring all the classic items and also a vegetarian option too.

Breakfast is served until 11.30 and the menu can found on Facebook.

Jonny Donuts and Oliver’s Eatery

The well established Cleethorpes seafront cafe and takeaway is currently number two in the list of places to grab some breakfast according to Tripadvisor.

They’re offering a takeaway breakfast box that looks absolutely delicious for just £4.95.

As someone working the weekend shift – I can assure you I’ll be trying this one out.

Find them on Facebook.

Browns Cafe

There are many places in the top 10 on Tripadvisor for breakfast that are closed due to the ongoing pandemic.

The legendary Browns established in 1880 is not one of them, sitting at number seven.

They’re open for takeaway drinks and food and can now be found on

Deliveroo. Breakfasts start at £5 and can even be upgraded with scallops?!

Find more details on their Facebook page.

The Helm

Now this looks like the sort of place that knows what they’re talking about when it comes to breakfast needs after a few too many lockdown measures.

The Cleethorpes cafe is on the Grimsby and Clee Eats app and is offering up the traditional breakfast alongside some more upmarket options like avocado on toast and a scrambled eggs topped with smoked salmon.

They also do a breakfast box for up to six people featuring all the trimmings you could want on a full English just scaled up in portion size. Find them on Facebook or on the app.

Other options

Unfortunately I can’t list everyone but here are a couple places that also cropped up in my search that could be viable options. The 318 Sandwich Bar in Grimsby looks like a more than respectable option offering breakfast boxes and is open 8am until 2pm.

Similarly, Dawn’s Deli in Cleethorpes is open 8am until 2pm offering a variety of breakfast options. It can now be found on Deliveroo.

The Arc is open from 7.30am until 2.30pm and looks like they’re offering breakfast options. It’s worth checking their Facebook page for more details.
