PET funerals at Grimsby’s brand new animal crematorium will cost up to £534.

Building work on the area’s first pet crematorium - Treasured Memories - is nearing completion and will open next month.

Prices have now been set and a full service with music and a webcast will cost from £433 for a rabbit to £534 for a large dog. Cremation fees are £58 for a rabbit or small pet, £93 for a cat, £116 for a small dog and £159 for a large dog.

Hosting a service at the Treasured Memories Chapel will be £200 with music an additional £35.

A webcast to let others join the service will be £35 and internment of ashes will cost £105.

That means anybody wanting a full funeral service with all the extras for their rabbit would be charged £433, and £534 for a large dog. A cat funeral would cost £468. Council Cabinet members were told that currently, the nearest facility for deceased pets is at Doncaster. Portfolio holider for environment and transport, Councillor Stewart Swinburn said: “It is important we have a facility locally. Pets are a big part of family life and this will add to our bereavement services.”

It has its own separate entrance next to the main Grimsby Crematorium on Weelsby Avenue.

A report to councillors stated: “There are only a small number of pet crematoriums in operation, most of which are private and very few are owned by local authorities. “There are no pet crematoriums in North East Lincolnshire and there is a growing market for this type of provision, with the pet funeral industry nationally being worth over £100 million a year.

“Construction work on the new pet crematorium, which is located adjacent to Grimsby crematorium and has its own separate entrance, has now been completed.

“An additional chapel has been incorporated into the design, which can be used if pet owners wish to have a memorial/farewell service and can also be utilised as an additional chapel for small funeral services.”

A licence for its operation is due to be granted in time for the opening in April.

The charges for the new service were agreed by councillors.
