STAFF at Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital had a challenging job getting their new MRI machine into the building.

The machine, one of two being installed at the hospital, was being carefully moved into the hospital in a monumental effort on Saturday morning.

Pictures from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust’s director of estates and facilities, Jug Johal, show the MRI scanner arriving on the back of a truck, as well as a noticeably small space to get the MRI scanner into the hospital.

The rest of the photos show workers managing to just about squeeze the MRI machine through the space, before putting it in place in one of their new scanner rooms.

Writing on Twitter, Jug Johal said: “Our first of two new MRI scanners have arrived onsite at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby. I hope the hole is big enough!”

NLaG Digital Services also retweeted the photos and added: “1 of 2 new MRIs delivered today! These will now be supercooled to -272°c over the course of many days.

“Our Network & Systems teams will make sure monitoring systems work and images from these scanners get to clinicians who need them.”

The machines are being installed as part of an £8.4 million redevelopment of Grimsby hospital, giving them a brand new, state-of-the-art MRI suite. The current MRI scanner at the hospital is 15 years old, and relies on support from a mobile MRI scanner, so the two new scanners will make a big impact for both staff and patients. Speaking about the development in 2020, Peter Reading, chief executive of the NHS Trust, said: “We’re delighted to start work on this new MRI suite. It’s a great investment into the future of Grimsby Hospital and for our patients. “The expectation is it will improve and speed up the experience for our patients, as well as reducing waiting times, in turn having a positive effect on any treatment they may need. “Our current scanner at the hospital is around 15 years old and relies on support from a mobile MRI scanner, so replacing it and installing an additional machine will be a brilliant upgrade. “I’d like to thank those members of staff who have made this possible – it is down to them our patients will receive even better care when coming to Grimsby hospital.”
