LUKE USES FORCE IN TOWN WIN

BIG STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AFTER KEY VICTORY

IT’S just one win for Grimsby Town, but it’s a big step in the right direction as they gave themselves renewed hope in their fight against relegation at Barrow.

The Mariners narrowed the gap to safety to seven points as Luke Spokes’ brilliant strike secured a massive 1-0 win against their relegation rivals. The midfielder was given the nod after impressing off the bench at Mansfield, and he struck the decisive blow with 20 minutes to go at Holker Street to give Town the victory they desperately needed last night.

And while there’s still a long way to go for the Mariners to turn their deficit around, it could prove to be a huge moment in their efforts to remain in the EFL.

“The lads put in a great shift in difficult conditions, as they have done for the last few weeks,” first team coach Ben Davies told the Grimsby Telegraph.

“We deserved a bit of fortune tonight, and it’s a huge win for us. It’s a massive step in the right direction.

“We’ve felt like the rub of the green hasn’t gone our way recently. There’s been a few games where we could have come away with the win. “Obviously you look at George (Williams)’s one on Saturday where he’s hit the post, and other bits in games where with a bit more oomph in the final third, we could have easily come away with two or three wins. “The focus was on tonight, there was massive pressure on the lads to get that win, and they’ve gone out and handled it well and were absolutely superb.”

On Spokes’ goal, Davies added:

“I’m made up with him. We spend hours with the lads after training with shooting, and he’s always the last one to leave.

“It falls to the edge of the box, and even though it’s on his weaker foot, you think you’ve got half a chance with him.

“It’s probably been a frustrating season with him being in and out of the team. When you look at his performance tonight and where he’s come from, I’ve done a lot of work with him first hand and for him to get the winner’s great. It was a superb performance all round from him.”
