Oil worker died after drinking water mixed with hand sanitiser

A SEAMAN tragically died on an oil tanker in the North Sea after drinking water mixed with hand sanitiser, an inquest heard. Harshadkumar Tandel, 42, was aboard the MT Navig8 Amessi on June 6, last year when he fell ill on a staircase and began to make “howling sounds” in a staircase on the ship.
Hull Coroner’s Court heard that Mr Tandel was escorted to his cabin, but then had a heart attack and the Coastguard were called for emergency medical assistance.
Sadly, nothing could be done to save Mr Tandel and he was transported from the vessel to Grimsby Docks after he was pronounced dead. Professor Paul Marks said that Mr Tandel’s death was a result of methanol toxicity and said that his death was an accident.
“The concentration of methanol found in this gentleman’s blood stream was likely to have resulted in his death,” he said.

strangely and making howling sounds. “He was escorted back to his cabin, when his breathing went shallow and he went into cardiac arrest. “Attempts were made to resuscitate Mr Tandel, but these sadly proved unsuccessful.
“The captain of the vessel reported that the night before his death, the deceased had mixed hand sanitiser with water and attempted to drink it. “Many medicines and drugs were recovered from his cabin. His wife said that he enjoyed good health whilst working as a merchant seaman. “There is absolutely no suggestion that this gentleman intended to harm himself by taking methanol containing fluids, and this would appear to be a tragic and unfortunate accident.”
