A THUG pulled a carving knife on a man, stole his car and then threatened his daughter in a terrifying chain of events.

Mikey Cox, 23, of Whitecross Street in Barton-upon-Humber, along with his friend Dylan Cameron, 20, of Overton Court, targeted the man in Baysgarth View. Grimsby Crown Court heard that at around 1am on August 19, 2018, the man was getting his tools from his car when he was approached by Cox and Cameron who were just 20 and 18 at the time.

Prosecuting, David Hall told the court that the man knew Cameron but had not seen Cox before and the three exchanged greetings as they passed by him.

Mr Hall said: “They came back soon after.

“Mikey Cox was aggressive and was demanding to know where the car keys were. The man said they were either in the ignition or on the driver’s seat. Mikey Cox then got out a large carving knife and began waving it side to side in a threatening manner and asked where the keys were.

“He opened the driver’s door and the victim went to the passenger door to prevent him but Cox found them and started the engine, threatening to stab him should he try to get into the car.” Cameron got into the passenger side of the door and the two sped off.

It was driven for six miles before becoming involved in a collision. In an interview with the author of the pre-sentence report, Cameron told how Cox drove the car at speeds of up to 108mph.

Mr Hall told the court that as the victim and his wife were at the police station giving his statement, they left their children with a neighbour.

Cox visited the neighbour, telling his victim’s daughter “tell your dad he is a dead man, a walking dead man.”

Mitigating for Cox, David Godfrey told the court that it is “utterly perplexing” as to how Cox found himself in the situation he did in 2018.

He sad: “It is not the man he is now. It is clear drink and drugs aggravated his behaviour. He is a young man who was out of sorts and acting in a disgraceful way. “He has made significant steps since, he has a partner and a job and a life and at the time he didn’t have those things.”

Mr Godfrey said Cox wished to apologise to his victim who he understands “would have been petrified.”

The barrister added: “If he could take it back, he would.”

Craig Lowe, mitigating for Cameron, said: “This is well over twoand-a-half years ago now and there offences before or after this. He has disassociated from his cooffenders. He is at low-risk of reoffending and he has consciously limited his drink intake.” Cameron was given a second chance in the form of a year-long community order for aggravated vehicle taking but Cox was not so lucky, instead handed a three-year prison sentence for driving whilst disqualified, robbery and aggravated vehicle taking. Recorder Tahir Khan QC said: “Mikey Cox, you’re in a different position. While I have taken on board everything said on your behalf and in your testimonials there is no alternative.

“You have demonstrated remorse for what you did. You have a stable relationship and a job. I have to think about both the community at large and what’s right and proper and the seriousness of the offence that you committed.”

Cox must serve up to half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence.

Both men have been disqualified from driving.
