GRIMSBY’S latest Subway branch has opened for takeaway customers. For owner Aman Nijjar and his wife Kirran, this is now his fifth Subway, 15 years after they first opened in Victoria Street, Grimsby. Kirran had the honour of performing the ribbon cutting at the new Birchin Way outlet and was applauded by staff and relatives. The couple already own Subways in Grimsby, Louth, Immingham and Cleethorpes.

Aman, who started working in the family grocery business on Grimsby’s Grange estate, and at New Waltham and Holton-le-Clay said the Subway brand had been well received by customers.

He received more than 300 applications for the 26 jobs he and his wife have created by opening the new dine-in and takeaway service. The 25-seat restaurant is due to open later once lockdown restrictions are lifted for indoor venues. Aman said: “It is a good brand. We are really pleased with how it looks.” Looking back at when the Victoria Street outlet opened in 2006, Aman said: “It was a whole new brand and people were not aware of the concept of choosing and how to select their food before queuing. How things have moved on.

“Even though many people recognise Subway as an American company, being the owner of this franchise and having lived in Grimsby all my life, I am proud to currently employ 80 local people across all of our stores.

“A year ago with all the restrictions we were not sure if we would ever be able to open. But luckily we have got on with it and adhered to the restrictions. Although sitting is closed, we still provide a take-out service. Hopefully by May people will be able to enjoy the new restaurant.” After a very testing year we are looking forward to better days ahead.

Among the first customers was Chloe Smith who travelled to the opening.

She said: “I am really pleased to see it open. It is more local to me and I like the way they do the salads, which I love.”

Manager Kay Jassie, was helping the new starters behind the counter and welcomed a steady flow of customers straight after the opening. Like all Subway branches, the fresh food is on view for customers to select their favourite salad fillings, bread, meats, cheeses and sauces. The new Subway is next to the newly-opened Costa Coffee drivethru.

It is open from 6.30am to 9pm every day, except for Fridays and Saturdays when it closes at 10pm.
