A NEW gym is set to open in Grimsby as the country moves into stage two of easing lockdown.

Brothers Dominic and Reece Wilkin and friend Daniel Gulsher planned to open The Performance Lab, on Brighowgate, last year. But the Covid-19 crisis delayed their vision to bring new life back to the former Rob Speed Suzuki showrooms.

One year on and with restrictions lifting tomorrow, the Performance Lab will open its doors from 7am to showcase a new beginning for the redundant buildings.

They have been transformed thanks to Dominic and Reece and their partner Daniel. The business partners have also forged collaborations with local firms to promote a clothing range and sports therapy treatment. The unique strength of Performance Lab is the balance that is struck between physical health and mental health.

Dominic plans to host visitors from 7am at the Lab’s open day tomorrow and show off the features and promote the well-being of prospective members and visitors with day passes.

“We have a lot of contractors working in the area and many who serve in the Armed Forces,” told Dominic, a fully-qualified martial arts instructor.

He added: “I see exercise as good for mental health. Training is good for the mind and helps to relieve stress. “We have a great team with Daniel Gulsher who has been a personal trainer for more than 10 years after Armed Forces’ service and my brother Reece who is a life-long gym addict and enjoys weight training.”

Dominic said: “Gyms can be quite intimidating places. Ours is an open environment for people to visit and experience the right attitude towards fitness and well-being through our mission which is if you need help just ask.”

He said he was pleased to have regenerated a town centre building.

“We have done it all ourselves and liked the idea of a centre for physical and mental health. We are passionate about providing that service,” told Dominic, 33.

His wife, Hannah has a salon, Sorority Beauty Lab on Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes and they decided to keep the Lab theme. Dominic said: “In the same way at the salon we want people to know they can off load any problems they have.” The Lab comprises of Olympic lifting decks, sled track, punch bags, martial arts and training area and a communal studio.

Membership rates and the cost of day passes is available from Performance Lab Grimsby Facebook page.
