BOLLARDS in Grimsby town centre are to be raised 24 hours a day to stop vehicles going on the pedestrian only area.

North East Lincolnshire Council is taking action after reports of increased traffic on the central area of Victoria Street and a concerning parking situation on Osborne Street at the East St Mary’s Gate junction. The council will now keep the bollards permanently raised and operational from Friday, April 16, with traffic marshals enforcing restrictions in the area between 8am and 9pm from today.

North East Lincolnshire Council said: “In response to concerns about the increased volume of vehicles accessing the pedestrian area in Grimsby town centre when bollards are dropped, plans are being put in place for the bollards to be permanently operational and raised. “Changes will take effect from Monday, April 12, with traffic marshals in place each day between 8am and 9pm, to restrict vehicles entering the pedestrianised zone and allowing only permitted use of the area for businesses.

“The bollard supplier will be attending site on Friday, April 16 to programme the bollards to be raised 24 hours a day.

“The move aims to address a number of road safety concerns highlighted in this area by local businesses, residents, Humberside Police and highway officials, and also support the next stage of the easing of lockdown by creating more pavement space to support social distancing and outdoor seating arrangements.

“Officers have engaged with businesses in the area and re-assured all those affected that continuity of commercial activity will be unaffected with these changes. “North East Lincolnshire Council and Engie are also continuing to monitor vehicles parking on a section of Osborne Street at the East St Mary’s Gate junction, following the introduction of bollards in March, and are working with Humberside Police for a longer term solution.” Permitted vehicles will still be allowed into the pedestrianised area.

They include:

■ Authorised contractors, utilities and waste vehicles

■ Vehicles being used to deliver goods to stores in the above streets but only where due to the size and weight of the deliveries it is impracticable not to park elsewhere and carry the goods.

■ Postal service vehicles

■ Security vehicles

■ Emergency vehicles (fire, police, ambulance, coast guard)

■ Local authority vehicles (Engie/ NELC)
