TRIBUTES have been paid to two men who died just hours apart during a tragic night in Cleethorpes. Named locally as 21-year-old Adam Barber, and Ian Meek, 44, they lost their lives in two separate incidents on Grant Street and Sea View Street respectively.

The two deaths are not being treated as suspicious and are not thought to be linked.

After enjoying his first night out in a while as lockdown restrictions were eased, Adam was on his way home when he reportedly fell off the kerb on Grant Street, injuring his head.

Ambulance and police were called to the scene at around 7.15pm. He was taken to hospital where he sadly later died.

His dad, who visited the scene yesterday, told the Telegraph: “He’d just lost his grandad and just came out to enjoy the first night back when he accidentally fell over and hit his head.

“Adam was a normal young lad who was just trying to make his way home, he was meant to start a new job today as well.

“This is just a tragic accident.” He added: “I’ve seen a lot of people comment that it’s the fault of the pubs but there is no blame on them.

“They’re just people trying to make an honest living and it so unfortunate that this tragic accident occurred.”

One nearby business owner said: “It’s so sad to hear about what’s happened to him.

“It was likely there may be an accident with places opening up again, but this is just extremely sad and an awful loss of life, what a shame.” Another, who witnessed the tragic accident explained: “I drove past as I was closing the shop and noticed the poor man on the floor.

“It’s so sad to hear the news that he’s passed away from his injuries. I saw the accident, but I never thought this would be the tragic result of his injuries.” Tributes have poured in for Adam and flowers have been laid at the scene near the roundabout at the junction of High Street and Alexandra Road. One note read “R.I.P Adam, love you, you will be missed forever.” A passer-by said: “It’s so sad to hear that the young lad has lost his life. I’m glad he got chance to enjoy his last night, but it’s tragic that such a young person has lost their life.”

In a further tragedy just hours later, police were called to Sea View Street, where Ian – whose devastated colleagues at the Coach House have paid tribute to him – had sadly collapsed.

The popular bar manager also tragically later died in hospital. Humberside Police said their sympathies were with the families and friends of both men. A spokesman said: “We were called to Grant Street in Cleethorpes shortly before 7.15pm on Monday, April 12.

“A man was reported to have collapsed in the street and there was concern for his welfare and safety. Emergency services attended immediately and took a 21-year-old man to hospital for treatment. “Sadly the man passed away in hospital.

“At 1.15am on Tuesday, April 13, we received a call regarding the concern for safety of a man who had collapsed on Sea View Street in Cleethorpes. “Emergency services attended and took the man to hospital for treatment. Sadly the man passed away in hospital a short time later.”

The spokesman said neither death was thought to be suspicious and investigations were ongoing.

He’d just lost his grandad and came out to enjoy the first night back when he fell over and hit his head.
