BeingBi away f from Blundell Park has been disheartening

Grimsby Town fan and mental health ambassador Terry Birkett writes about his experiences as fans have been forced to watch from afar…

HAVING followed the Mariners through the years and experienced high and lows, promotions and relegations, being away from Blundell Park this season has been disheartening.

My love for football and following Grimsby Town has dwindled with not being able to attend games, meet friends, and previously being in the press box writing about my team.

Following them on iFollow is just not the same. As fans, we live for the atmosphere, the pre-match build-up, anticipating, wondering what Town will turn up.

It’s those little things you miss, and I think it’s hit the players too this season. Having no fan base cheering them on has had a massive influence on the season, and right now is what would lift them in their relegation battle.

I, like many fans, wait in anticipation to return to watch live football.

Times look bleak at the minute with us being in a relegation dogfight at the bottom of League Two, but I think the players have given their all lately, and have just been unlucky in recent games.

I feel for the fans having been away so long. Football has always helped me through my life, even saved me at times, and especially helped me with my mental health. We all have hobbies in life, and football is one of mine.

I really hope we stay in the league this season, but with games going by fast it’s looking doubtful.

But we live in hope, and that’s one thing we all have to cling on to. I hope we make the remaining games count, and hopefully we will all be back in the near future when things look brighter and the takeover is complete so we can move forward as a football club.

I love this club, my hometown club. We have a lot of history here, and history might pass, but moments stay in our hearts.

This football club takes you on the ride of your life – we just have to hope that, in time, we are on more ups then downs, and we can build a foundation and team that can substantially push in the right direction up the leagues, even if we are to face the drop into non-league.
