A MAN had to have brain surgery after his friend led police on a 75mph chase through Grimsby and crashed into a tree. Stean Daniel Cummings, 23, of Second Avenue, was driving through Grimsby on July 31, 2019, when he was spotted by an armed officer dealing with another incident and became suspicious of his driving.

The officer began to follow the Vauxhall Astra Cummings was driving and he began to speed off. Prosecuting, Samuel Ponniah told Grimsby Crown Court on Monday: “The PC began to pursue the car and Mr Cummings drove dangerously throughout.

“He was driving up to speeds of 75mph in 30mph zones, overtaking vehicles at junctions, driving in pedestrian areas and driving down one-way streets. “He was driving on the wrong side of a dual carriageway and lost control of the car and crashed into a tree on the central reservation.” Cummings suffered serious injuries to his leg while a friend in the back of the car suffered a fractured skull and a haematoma, for which he had to undergo surgery. The man has not spoken to

Humberside Police about his injuries, but Mr Ponniah told the court it is understood he has fully recovered.

The court also heard Cummings had no driving licence or insurance at the time of the offence. Andrew Bailey, mitigating, told the court Cummings had written a letter to the judge, Recorder Hawks, and a presentence report was carried out where it was recommended he be given a suspended sentence. Recorder Hawks told him: “You made a very foolish decision, not having a driving licence or any insurance.

“You knew it was bound to end in disaster and it ended in a police chase and a collision which nearly killed a friend of yours.

“I don’t need to tell you what a stupid and irresponsible thing it was. I have read reports about you and it seems to me you are someone who is capable of conducting life without coming into trouble with criminal law.” Recorder Hawks handed Cummings a sentence of 18 months imprisonment which was suspended for 18 months. Cummings must also carry out unpaid work and has been disqualified from driving for two years. He will have to take an extended driving test once that time has passed.
