Nurse urges people to take up second Covid vaccine

‘BOTH DOSES OFFER MUCH BETTER PROTECTION’

GRIMSBY’S Chief Nurse has urged everyone to make sure they get their second dose of vaccine to help beat coronavirus.

Thanks to NHS staff the roll-out of anti-virus vaccines in North East Lincolnshire has been hugely successful, with some venues giving 500 jabs per day.

The take-up of the first dose of vaccine reached well over 90 per cent of patients at the start of the year.

But Lisa Revell, executive director of operations and Chief Nurse at Care Plus Group said it is vital that people return for their second dose after a number of booked appointments had been missed.

It is not known how many people have not turned up for their appointments but some patients are mistakenly thinking a single jab will given them full protection, said the nurse. There are just three people being treated in hospitals in Grimsby and Scunthorpe and none are in intensive care.

But public health officials stress the need for everyone to make sure they get both doses of vaccine to ensure the greatest protection.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said vaccines are being ordered to give people even greater protection for the winter.

The Open Door and Quayside Medical Practice on Albion Street, doctors surgeries in Cleethorpes, Immingham and Scartho have all had regular supplies of vaccine to distribute to patients. The Birkwood medical practice and Wellington Street chemist has also invited people to book in for their first and second doses of vaccine. Drugs4Delivery at Moss Road has also booked in patients when supplies of vaccine have been distributed by the NHS on designated days.

Chief Nurse Revell said: “I would like to remind people of the importance of attending for their Covid-19 vaccination when invited and also to ensure they attend for both doses as this offers much better protection.

“Also please bear in mind, whether you have had your vaccine or not, to continue to follow all the guidance in place to control the virus. This is imperative to everyone’s safety and for us to continue to resume some normality in our life.”

She added: “We welcome the news that restrictions are being gradually lifted and lockdown is easing as we appreciate the effect this has had on people in terms of mental health and isolation. At Care Plus Group, we are looking forward to reopening services safely and in line with guidelines.”
