Vandals destroy newly-installed noticeboard in Weelsby Woods

‘TO WHOMEVER SMASHED THIS, YOU’VE SET US BACK YEARS’

VANDALS have completely destroyed a newlyinstalled noticeboard in Weelsby Woods.

The new noticeboard was meant to replace an older one, showing the variety of trees and the beautiful trails around the popular parkland.

All that remains is broken pieces of wood which one of the Friends of Weelsby Woods and Heneage ward Councillor Mark Smith had paid for and built himself.

He said he was disgusted at the mindless attack.

The North East Lincolnshire Council ward member for Heneage said he and fellow Friends of Weelsby Woods were working hard to promote the woods as a safe and attractive area to visit.

He said: “It is disgusting to see what has happened.

“It was installed to replace the older noticeboard which had become dilapidated.

“It makes you think about making the new noticeboard out of sheet metal to prevent vandalism.”

Friends of Weelsby Woods posted a message on their Instagram: “Why smash it up? Did it make you feel powerful? We have been trying to get the new noticeboards sorted by the playground for literal and actual, years. Four years to be precise. Why make our lives more difficult?

“We do not get paid for doing any of this. You smashing this up has caused extra work and stress for us and there is no pay-off.

“To whomever smashed this, you’ve set us back years, thanks a lot.

The damage was caused just days after the noticeboard was installed a week ago.

When staff at local business Lilliput Waste Disposal heard of the damage, the firm agreed to repair the noticeboard and install it for free.

In June a plaque to honour Grimsby war heroes was defaced and splattered with spray paint.

Each of the faces have been cruelly blotted out as though shot with a paintball gun.

Most of the text about their service was made illegible, with red paint and graffiti running across it.

The memorial in Weelsby Woods commemorates the Capathian Lancers, a Polish regiment who camped in Grimsby after they were unable to return home following the Second World War.

New CCTV cameras are due to be switched on in the Woods before the end of the year.

They will help deter a growing number of incidents of antisocial behaviour and criminal damage and fires.
