A DRIVER who was ‘spotted laughing’ before ploughing into a gaggle of geese - killing one and injuring five others - has come forward after pictures of the vehicle were circulated on social media.

The incident on Sunday caused outrage among animal lovers and a member of Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue branded him ‘sick in the head’ after a couple said they observed the van driver laughing before driving at the gaggle. Humberside Police have told the charity that no criminal action will be taken and the culprit will be making a donation.

But members of the rescue group are appalled and say they have not yet received anything.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: “The driver of the van contacted us following the social media surrounding the incident.

“Officers have now spoken to the driver concerned who is extremely remorseful about his actions, for causing the death of the goose and for the distress caused to the public. It was decided that criminal action will not be taken against the driver on this occasion and he has

offered to make a donation to the Cleethorpes Animal Sanctuary.”

But the group has posted on its Facebook page: “This is a deflating result for wild

life, not only on this occasion, but for all the cases of abuse that occur.

“It’s very easy to be ‘remorseful’ after you’ve been caught out - not that it brings any justice for the life that was killed and others that was injured.

“Although all rescues struggle with funds and the costs are unimaginable, that doesn’t mean your actions are cleared by ‘making a donation’ (we’re unaware of

any that has been made anyway).

“We share this earth with other species, it’s time we kick out this type of response to absurd behaviour. A goose with wing or leg injuries/ fractures costs around £350£450 for vet care and rehabilitation (at best) - that’s £1,750 for this incident if they’re all found alive.

“Rescues struggle enough and actions like this close them! Stop the abuse.”
