ONE of Grimsby’s most iconic bars has been sold to new owners.

The Friary on Victoria Street has served customers for generations.

The large venue which dates back to 1860 has been a popular bar and has undergone several refurbishments over the years to attract more customers.

Previously it was known as Bar DN31 and Edwards.

The owners up until the start of this month were Mitchells and Butlers. The windows and door with the ornamental lantern light at the front, were all boarded up with metal sheets, giving the impression the bar was closed for good.

The gates at the rear off Bethlehem Street were also locked.

But the firm, which has around 1,500 venues nationwide, confirmed it had been sold, resulting in some job losses.

Others have secured employment working at the firm’s other venues.

A spokesman said: “We can confirm The Friary in Grimsby has closed on November 5.

“This decision has been taken after careful consideration and as part of the continual review of our estate.

“As part of the process we worked with the team at the pub to explore alternative job roles and are pleased that some team members were able to transfer to other pubs and restaurants within our estate nearby.

“We wish to thank all team members and guests who have visited The Friary and we wish the new owners success as they now take over ownership.”

Customers were enjoying the service up until the weekend.

The venue has long had a good reputation for service and quality food and ales.

On TripAdvisor some customers recommended the bar which has a 3.5 rating out of five.

One review from September said: “Cannot believe the price! Will be back and the service was great too. Could do with a lick of paint though but can not fault the place.”

A review from June said: “Staff are always friendly and helpful. Was treated with a warm welcome, and drinks are at a very good valued price.”

Another Grimsby town centre bar, Annie’s, on West St Mary’s Gate has also been boarded up with a for sale sign, as many pub owners went bust after successive lockdowns.

It is estimated there are around 10 per cent fewer bars and restaurants than there were before the Covid pandemic.

Thousands closed due to the lack of trade.
