A HOUSE in Ulceby has been badly damaged following a fire.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service were called at around 8.54am yesterday to deal with the house fire on Front Street.

The fire service deployed two crews from Immingham, and one crew from Grimsby.

They managed to extinguish the ground floor fire at around 10.05am.

Some residents said they saw the property, “burning from the bottom up”.

Angela Moores, who lives on Front Street, said she couldn’t believe what she saw when taking her children to school this morning.

She said: “I was in a mad rush to get the kids to school on time when I could see flames from the window of the property.

“It really did alarm me because I didn’t know what to do or what to think.

“I was horrified to think of the people inside.

“I was speaking to one of the neighbours who said that the fire services were on their way, this was about 8.40am.

Francis Goldman, who always lives on Front Street, said he could smell the flames at his home.

He said: “It was terrible. We were all frightened.

“All I could smell from the inside of my house was smoke.

“I thought my property was on fire at first.

“But when I went to the window, I saw three engines across the street, so I went to take a look.

“I went down the street to see these bright, orange flames on the ground floor inside the house.

“I’d never seen anything like that before so it really was a scary experience.

“But the fire service did an incredible job by extinguishing the fire.

“They really are life-savers and although the damage looks awful post the event, the main thing was ensuring that people were safe.

“That will always come first.” Vicky Sayers, also from Front Street, was fearful that the fire might spread.

She told the Grimsby Telegraph: “It really scared the living daylights out of me.

“I was heading to the shops in my car and driving along Front Street, when all I could see was these violent flames taking a hold of a house.

“I thought that I was just dreaming it up in my head because nothing like this happens in Ulceby.

“But then I realised it was real and I started to get really tense.

“Some people looked heartbroken by what they saw.

“And I could see the Fire Service arriving and they drove straight past me to do their job.

“A friend called me to say that the fire had been put out at around 10am.

“I had a little walk past the house earlier on and you can just see the aftermath of the damage - the ground floor windows are burnt, one window has been boarded up.

“The top floor looks unaffected.

“It was definitely an experience none of us want to relive anytime soon.”

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service said: “We can confirm we were called to a private property in Ulceby at 8.54am and a fire was extinguished on the ground floor.

“Four breathing apparatus, two hose reels and a main line were in use and the incident was closed at 10.05am.”
