Chewing gum spruce-up for resort
CLEETHORPES Christmas shoppers will see a chewing gum spruce up on their streets.
Eco Removal Systems are set to hit the streets before Christmas thanks to funding cash for a post-Covid renewal of England’s town centres.
The Government’s Welcome Back Fund will pay to remove unsightly chewing gum deposits that have built up in areas of high footfall in Cleethorpes.
In a project set to take about 20 days, chewing gum will be removed from three areas of focus: High Street, between Barclays Bank and Sea Road, Sea Road itself and the main thoroughfare of St Peter’s Avenue.
The pavement will be cleaned using specialist measures - ecofriendly detergent is pumped into a boiler/heater for heating.
Once it has reached optimal temperature, the detergent is then shot out of the attached lance at approximately 95-100 degrees, quickly vaporising the gum with minimal effort.
Due to the method used, there will be no need for pavements to be cordoned off, so less disruptive to shoppers in the run-up to the Christmas period.
Councillor Callum Procter, cabinet member for tourism, said: “This funding is one-off, and a chance for us to work on improving some problem areas.
“Chewing gum deposits are notoriously hard to remove, so we thought we’d take the opportunity and get rid of a bit of a build up. However, the best thing, of course, would be for people to use litter bins rather than the floor!”
The work has been funded through the Government’s Welcome
Back Fund, part of the ERDF funded Covid recovery scheme across the UK.
