A LIVE production of Steptoe and Son is coming to Cleethorpes this November as part of a national tour.

The show, which follows the staged radio play format, will recreate a Sixties recording studio inside Cleethorpes Library.

The show has been created by Hambledon Productions, a professional theatre company based in Lincolnshire.

The show heads to Cleethorpes on Saturday, November 27.

The new, festive radio play based on the original TV scripts by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson is guaranteed to satisfy old and new fans of Steptoe and Son alike.

The production features much-loved classic episodes as well as recently rediscovered scripts of which the original recordings have not been preserved.

“We’ve been touring with various guises of a Steptoe tribute show for four years,” said John Hewer, who adapted the scripts and plays the role of Harold Steptoe.

“The Christmas version – in particular – is very popular as it carries that a special melancholic hint of nostalgia and the writing is tinged with a feeling of added poignancy, as well as the big laughs that any fan would expect.”

This touring production recreates a late-1960s BBC recording studio, and Jeremy Smith and John Hewer, who play Steptoe and Son respectively, are joined on stage by Lucy Cooper, playing Harold’s on-off girlfriend Delia, and Alice Murray and Christopher Peters, who play the BBC Announcers and provide the live sound effects.

“The radio play set-up is quite a common thing now,” added John. “It’s a totally different way of interpreting the performances and really revelling in the writing more than anything else. The audiences love to feel involved in witnessing their favourite episodes brought back to life in this extra creative, candid way.”

The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £9 for general admission or £8 for concessions.
