Resort’s Christmas tree goes up - and many say it beats Grimsby’s ‘twig’
BUT THERE ISN’T EXPECTED TO BE A BIG FESTIVE SWITCH-ON EVENT
THIS year’s Christmas tree is starting to take shape at St Peter’s church in Cleethorpes.
Workers have been putting in the hard graft to ensure that the town is getting into the festive spirit.
The tree is now in place and looks magnificent, say residents.
All the tree needs now is to be decorated with the lights and all the Christmas trimmings.
However, there isn’t expected to be a big switch-on event.
And some of the locals couldn’t help but take a dig at the 10ft Christmas tree that was placed in Grimsby’s Riverhead Square last week.
It was swiftly removed after the council said it was placed too early.
The town’s main Christmas tree was placed in St James’ Square on Monday, November 22.
Alan Hancock, 57, feels Cleethorpes has a better tree than the one in St James’ Square.
He said said: “It’s starting to take shape and it’s definitely better than that twig Grimsby put up.
“The tree in Cleethorpes looks great so far, and I can’t wait to see what it looks like at night.
“It’s already better than Grimsby’s tree.”
Hannah King, 21, felt embarrassed to be from Grimsby following the controversy surrounding the Christmas tree.
She said: “It was really humiliat humiliating to see people from all over the country having a laugh at our expense.
“That Christmas tree was a complete joke. I was embarrassed to say I was from Grimsby last week.”
And Hannah was elated to see the new Christmas tree appear on St Peter Peter’s s Avenue this morning.
She said: “Thank goodness someone wants to make an effort for Christmas.
“I think it’s a great tree. That’s what Christmas is all about.
“It’s a shame there will be no live switch on event but I’m looking forward to seeing it with the lights on.” on.
