National League supremacy fight gathers intensity

HALIFAX, NOTTS COUNTY & WREXHAM ON THE CHARGE

-

GRIMSBY Town’s match against Boreham Wood was among a handful of games which fell victim to the stormy weather - but there was plenty of action elsewhere in the National League on Saturday.

Halifax won an exciting contest to rise above the Mariners and jump to third in the table.

Jordan Slew scored twice before Halifax held off a late comeback to win 3-2 at Torquay.

Slew opened the scoring on the half-hour mark with a low drive into the bottom corner.

Slew had his second just two minutes into the second half, drilling the ball into the top corner, before former Torquay forward Billy Waters put them three up.

Torquay scored twice in the last three minutes through Klaidi Lolos and Armani Little but they could not find an equaliser.

Kyle Wootton headed the winner as Notts County beat Dagenham 2-1 at Meadow Lane.

The Magpies took the lead in the 35th minute when skipper Kyle Cameron got his head to a corner and Frank Vincent nodded past Elliot Justham.

Angelo Balanta drew things level seven minutes later in similar fashion, heading in from a Myles Weston corner.

Wootton then secured all three points for the hosts as he connected with Cameron’s cross with 14 minutes of normal time to go.

The result leaves Ian Burchnall’s men fifth in the National League table, while Daryl McMahon’s Dagenham are 10th.

Wrexham made it six games unbeaten in the National League with a 2-0 victory over Bromley.

Liam Trotter was sent off for the Ravens before goals from Reece HallJohnson and Paul Mullin secured the win.

Bromley were reduced to 10 men in the eighth minute after Trotter’s challenge on Daniel Jarvis, which forced the midfielder to be taken off on a stretcher.

Hall-Johnson got the opener for the Red Dragons in the 33rd minute as his effort went in off a post.

Wrexham were on the hunt to extend their lead, and Mullin came close but was unable to connect with a dangerous ball in the box.

Mullin eventually doubled the lead in the 59th minute after firing him a first-time volley.

Bryce Hosannah nearly got a third 10 minutes later but his shot hit the post.

Ollie Crankshaw scored a secondhalf hat-trick as Stockport rolled over Wealdstone 4-1.

County went ahead in the 26th minute when Crankshaw’s effort was blocked and Scott Quigley snaffled up the rebound.

Crankshaw doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute when he finished a well-worked move from the visitors.

The winger tapped home from close range to make it three five minutes later and secured the match ball with a composed finish nine minutes from time before a late consolation from former Grimsby Town man Ira Jackson Jr.
