A PERIOD feature film shot and set in Lincolnshire will have a special screening tonight in Cleethorpes.

The stunning film, Lapwing, filmed exclusively in Lincolnshire, will be shown at Parkway Cinema Cleethorpes at 7pm followed by an in-person question and answer with the film makers including director Philip Stevens and writer Laura Turner. The panel discussion will be hosted by theatre director David Wrightam.

The movie features superb actor Hannah Douglas, alongside Emmett Scanlan, who is best known for playing Brendan Brady in Hollyoaks and also starred in Peaky Blinders.

Sebastian De Souza, who performed in Skins, is also in the cast, which includes Sarah Whitehouse and Lewis Gemmill.

Lapwing, is an historical drama set in 1555, a year after the Egyptian Act of 1554, which effectively criminalised Romani and Gypsy people and those who harboured them.

The plot sees an isolated group of salt farmers arrange illegal passage to Europe for an Indian Gypsy family in hiding. But a love affair between a mute English girl and the son of the Egyptians threatens to destroy both communities.

Produced by Lincolnshire based production company Urban Apache Films, the film is set in Lincolnshire and was filmed entirely in the county.

Being unable to speak, the woman at the centre of the story uses cries to communicate and sounds like a bird, which attracted the name Lapwing.

Director, Philip Stevens said: “The endless horizons and vast seascapes of the East Coast is the very inspiration for the film. We wanted to bring to life an area of the county rarely seen on screen.”

He told how Lapwing is an ambitious independent film and it is fitting that the special screening will take place in the UK’s largest independent cinema in the UK, which is in Lincolnshire.

Stevens and his talented team have been meticulous in capturing 16th Century life, with authentic recreations of the traditional Lincolnshire industry of salt farming.

The remains of the industry, with large salt mounds, can be clearly seen on walks along the coastline.

The county’s stunning landscapes and coastline are showcased on screen, with the majority of the film shot just outside Saltfleet and with other scenes shot outside Woodhall Spa and in East Firsby.

Most of the cast and crew are originally from or living in Lincolnshire while the rest of the creative team are from other parts of the East Midlands.

Stevens said: “We were very passionate about making a film that is Lincolnshire through and through and showcases the talent and resources that the county has to offer.”

The film has had lots of acclaim and has reinforced Lincolnshire’s growing attraction as a setting for film makers. It comes a month after the filming of Three Day Millionaire, shot in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
