What has the Prime Minister got against public transport?

- Tim Mickleburgh, Boulevard Avenue, Grimsby.

SO after the apocalyptic warnings about climate change, it is back to worrying over Covid. Johnson appears on the small screen with those scientific harbingers of doom and gloom to announce more restrictions on our liberties.

This time I presume he wants to be seen to be pro-active, and not be accused of taking actions far too late. But what has the Prime Minister got against public transport, which along with shops has been signalled out for mandatory face coverings?

I mean, why is it all right to sit in a café or bar without a mask opposite someone who is a stranger, when they must be worn sitting side by side with someone of your household on a bus that has its windows open?

I suppose we must be grateful that hospitality isn’t to be affected, however there is little logic behind what the Government are doing.

Seriously, we’re back to the old sledgehammer and nut routine. For I don’t know about anybody else, but I’ve not seen any evidence that buses or shops are responsible for a high level of Covid cases.

So it is with extreme reluctance that I will mask up in such locations, though I’m happy to do should I go to a hospital or care home as here there is a known risk, especially with vulnerable adults being involved.

Schools are arguably the biggest cause of outbreaks these days if one looks at the figures. Thus the priority ought to be to take action here, that is if we really are following the science. Not of course that I’m suggesting they should be closed.

In reality, though, it is the movement from other countries that is responsible for the latest problem, namely the new Omicron variant. Hopefully travel limitations will help to contain its spread. And by that I mean journeyings overseas, not on a local Stagecoach bus!

Again though, it is of real political concern that Johnson chose to bypass Parliament once more, announcing the latest measures via TV where the opposition parties don’t have the right to reply.

Sadly we’ve gone from rule by Brussels to rule by Prime Ministerial decree - a further move away from democracy.
