LAYBYS in two North East Lincolnshire villages have been permanently closed off to traffic after attracting a spate of ‘anti-social behaviour’ and fly-tipping.

The areas in Great Coates Road in Healing and Riby Road in Stallingborough have been shut by North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, EQUANS.

It follows discussions with local councillors on how to crack down on the problem.

Gates and a bund - a mound of material to block access - are in place to prevent unauthorised vehicles access and reduce instances of fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour at both sites. Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour impacts on our communities and ruins the surroundings. Working with our ward councillors and using their local knowledge of their wards is key to our efforts in stamping out these sorts of issues.

“Highway officials at EQUANS have supported in putting the necessary legalities in place to prohibit access by vehicles to these laybys and we will now monitor them to ensure people comply. Should these issues continue to persist, we will look at further options available to us.”

The problems have been reported to highway officials by ward councillors .

Ward councillor, Cllr David Hasthorpe, added: “This is something that has been brought to my attention and it’s something we must crack down on.

“Anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping will not be tolerated, and we will do all we can to prevent this from happening.”
