CLEETHORPES Academy art students have been to the moon and back for their latest project.

The Year 10s visited Grimsby Minster to see the “Museum Of The Moon” installation, which has been astounding audiences around the world.

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the large-scale moon featuring detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, has been installed in Grimsby Minster for a month and is free to view.

Created by UK artist Luke Jerram, the touring installation brings together lunar imagery, “moonlight” and a surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.

Grimsby has secured the exhibit ahead of some larger UK venues, and Cleethorpes Academy students were among the first to view it up close. Each centimetre of the exhibit represents 5km of the real moon, illustrating just how vast it really is.

Paul Kaylow, vice-principal of the academy, explained how the exhibit fits with the students’ curriculum: “This gives them an excellent opportunity to experience art in the real world from a world-renowned artist,” he said.

“Quite often students do not get the opportunity to see art in a real world setting and this really allows them to connect what they are doing in the classroom. It also gives them the opportunity to visit this fabulous building, which many of them have seen during their lifetime but never actually been inside.

“The students have also been sketching this morning because being in a venue like this gives them the opportunity to do live interactive art in a different setting. At Cleethorpes Academy we believe that students should embrace education through as many experiences as possible and to do that we need to break out of the classroom every once in a while.”

Student Kayleigh Gallant,14, said: “I cannot believe that someone actually managed to create a full picture of the moon, it is not an experience you get every day.”

Megan Munton, 14, added: “It is just incredible. I really love the moon. It is just something I have always enjoyed and the fact that I get to see something that I am never going to see again is really interesting.” Charlotte Bowen, Culture House Director, said: “We’re thrilled to be presenting this large-scale installation in town, in partnership with Grimsby Minster. The exhibit has had a really big impact on the Minster as well. The whole idea behind this was to bring the moon closer to people and we are really pleased to have been able to engage students in this project.”

You can book free tickets at https:// allevents.in/grimsby/ for weekend afternoons, when it’s open to the public.
