I tried the food at the new bistro on Abbeygate - and it didn’t disappoint

THE new bistro and patisserie on Abbeygate, Nasturtium, has been on my list of places to try for a good few weeks since it opened to the public back in March - and my goodness, was it worth the wait.

Bringing a “slice of London to Grimsby”, the trendy new spot is owned by chocolatier Richie Heppell, 45, and private chef Jack Phillips, 29.

It takes pride of place at the top of Abbeygate, making it as central as s can be.

Complete with stunning, modern n decor and a high-end vibe without t the hefty price tag, Nasturtium is a welcome addition to the food scene e in North East Lincolnshire.

And vegans in the area will be e delighted to know that there’s a whole host of tasty vegan dishes on n the menu.

I wanted to try as much food as I could for review purposes (and d maybe for my taste buds too) - so I enjoyed brunch at Nasturtium two o days in a row.

On my first visit, I tried the veggie e Garden Breakfast, which consisted d of poached eggs, grilled halloumi, , roasted tomato and mushroom, , smashed avocado and hollandaise e sauce on sourdough toast.

Each element of the dish sat on n top of one another in a cascade of f colours, flavours and textures.

It almost looked too good to eat, , but I still couldn’t wait to dig in. And d when I did, I found it was absolutely y delicious.

Each item in the breakfast complemented each other so well, and the halloumi was cooked perfectly.

Chef Jack also didn’t hesitate to inform me that many happy diners had referred to the Eggs Benedict as being “the best they’d ever had” - so I obviously had to test this for myself. How could I not?

The dish has often been my go-to whenever I’ve gone out somewhere for breakfast, and I have to say the one at Nasturtium was definitely up there with the best. People do have a point. Consisting of poached eggs,

Hollandaise ll d sauce, and d Lonzino (cured pork loin) on two English muffins, the dish was buttery and completely delicious, and the eggs were perfectly runny - which is exactly what you want if you’re ordering Eggs Benedict. I could quite happily eat this every morning for breakfast.

To finish off, I opted for the Nasturtium Chocolate Bombe, which included strawberry sorbet, chocolate brownie and honeycomb pieces and a tangy strawberry puree.

The h Instagram-worthy h video d opportunity this one comes with will certainly appeal to social media lovers.

The bomb is placed into a bowl and served to you, before the hot strawberry puree is poured over it, revealing the other elements of the dish.

I’ve never usually been a fan of strawberry and chocolate together, but this might have just changed my mind.

I was sold after my first visit to

Nasturtium, b but I needed dd to head hd back the next day anyway to film a Facebook Live video - so I obviously had to try some more of the food. Obviously.

This time, I flipped the menu over to the vegan options - yes, there are just as many vegan options as there are non-vegan, which I think is amazing. I chose the Savoury Waffle, consisting of a chive waffle, yoghurt with soy, salad leaves and maple glazed mushrooms. Being a big lover of the old ‘shrooms, I was excited for this t one. I’m not even vegan - or veggie, g for that matter - but I’d happily convert if I could eat dishes like this every day. It was absolutely delicious.

The mushrooms were coated perfectly f in the maple glaze and each element of the dish worked so well together. t I always love dishes that combine sweet and salty flavours, so this t one was right up my street.

To finish off with something sweet, I tried the Mango, Chocolate & Passionfruit Cake, consisting of mango mousse, m chocolate ganache, passionfruit and ginger gel and cocoa nibs. n It was light, moreish and tasted as good as it looked.

A lot of the typical desserts on restaurant t menus can often be sickly sweet, rich and heavy (not that I’ve ever complained about it) - but it was w still nice to enjoy a dessert that didn’t leave me feeling so full I could burst. b

My overall verdict

I think Nasturtium may be my new favourite brunch/lunch spot in Grimsby as it’s unlike any other place in the area. Each dish I tried was perfectly cooked and presented exquisitely.

It all looked and tasted expensive, but was so reasonably priced.

They’ve put attention into even the smallest details and clearly really care about what they do - including providing top-quality vegan options - which is lovely to see.

I wish Nasturtium every success and hope it will be there for years to come!
