BOSTON United will not face Grimsby Town in the National League next season - after losing 2-0 to York in the National League North play-off final.

And it was Mariners’ loanee Lenell JohnLewis who put York ahead on five minutes, with Maz Kouhyar making the game safe four minutes from time.

Boss Paul Cox said he was “gutted” after his side failed to secure promotion at the final hurdle.

Cox, the former Mansfield Town boss who was installed as the new Boston manager in January, said that he would be making “big decisions” following the defeat.

Speaking to Boston United in their postmatch interview with him, he said: “I’m gutted to be fair, gutted for the supporters, gutted for the players because we worked really, really hard. I think we just came up short today.

“I can’t really put my finger on it at the minute, but after the two performances we put in at Kidderminster and Fylde we just looked a little bit off it if I’m honest.”

Supporters on their way to York described their excitement in Boston ahead of the promotion final.

The excitement built up so much that two people camped outside Boston’s ground to make sure that they had seats at the game, with the cost of these two tickets said to have been covered by club chairman David Newton.

Those who didn’t make the journey to York were able to watch a live-stream of the game at the Jakemans Community Stadium.

Cox added: “We worked hard, but I don’t think we really ever looked like being effective in the final third.

“There’s big decisions moving forward because we’ve snuck into the play-offs, we’ve beat two very good teams, but I want us to be a little bit more consistent.”
