Two national retailers announce opening dates for new shops

TWO national name stores have announced opening dates for their new shops in Grimsby.

The first is Poundland as contractors put the finishing touches to its new store in Grimsby as it prepares to make the move to Freshney Place and play its role in the town’s regeneration.

It opens this Saturday, June 11, while Shoe Zone will also open in Freshney Place on June 17.

Staff at Poundland have been preparing for their move for several weeks and are excited about taking over the former New Look store on Victoria Street. They will open the doors on Saturday at 9am.

At more than 12,000 square feet, it is larger than a typical Poundland store and has been designed to offer the widest product range possible and to give customers a great shopping experience.

It will employ 23 full and part-time colleagues, the same as the store it replaces at 1-7 Victoria Street.

It has made way for the planned multi-million development of the western entrance to Freshney Place which will include a new food hall and multi-screen cinema.

The investment in the new Poundland store marks a vote of confidence in Grimsby and a commitment to the town centre as it undergoes redevelopment.

The Freshney Place site was previously occupied by New Look which closed in January.

The arrival of Poundland means shoppers will still have a leading clothing retailer to turn to in the store’s PEP&CO clothing for the whole family.

Following a period of remarkable growth, the PEP&CO brand has become one of the top 20 clothing retailers in the UK by volume in just seven years since its launch, say the owners. As well as womenswear, menswear and children’s wear, it will also have a dedicated PEP&CO Home department featuring the latest 2022 ranges, including kitchen storage options, faux plants, bathroom accessories and soft furnishings.

It will also join the growing number of Poundland stores, set to pass 350 this year, to sell chilled and frozen food.

Customers will also see the low prices they have come to expect across categories including food and drink, home and pet, entertainment and stationery. Poundland’s retail and transformation director, Austin Cooke, said: “Grimsby town centre is undergoing an exciting redevelopment and Poundland is proud to be playing its part of its regeneration.

“Our colleagues have worked hard to make sure that the new store will show off Poundland at its best and offer the town’s customers the amazing range and value they have come to expect from Poundland.”

ShoeZone will open on Friday, June 17, in the former JD Sports outlet in Freshney Place. The popular brand has committed to taking the 4,000sqft, double-faced unit in a prime location in the shopping centre.

JD Sports moved into a larger location in Freshney Place. Now ShoeZone will move into the empty sports shop, located between Greggs and O2.

The new store will stock popular brands such as Lotus, Heavenly Feet, Jana Softline and S’Oliver. Alongside these, you can expect to see the store’s signature ownbrand shoes and accessories. Kelvin Grant has been appointed as store manager.

Opening Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm and Sunday 10am to 4.30pm, the Grimsby store will offer the community affordable footwear catering for all ages at the new concept store.

Anthony Smith, chief executive at Shoe Zone, said: “We can’t wait to open our doors at the new Grimsby location, to offer the people of Lincolnshire easy access to the footwear they need, as soon as they need it.

“We’ll open with a wide range of footwear, including trainers and sandals that are perfect for the oncoming months. The whole Shoe Zone team is looking forward to showing customers instore!”

Shoe Zone offers student and blue light discount, both online and instore.

We can’t wait to open our doors at the new Grimsby location ...
