‘The prices just seem to be creeping up and up and up’

THE price of petrol and diesel is continuing to skyrocket, with one service station just outside of northern Lincolnshire advertising the price of fuel as more than £2 a litre.

According to figures released by the RAC on Thursday, June 9, the average cost of filling a family car has risen to £100 for the first time in history, describing the milestone as a “truly dark day for drivers”.

In response to the latest news, we spoke to drivers in Cleethorpes about how they are changing their driving habits as the cost of fuel crisis worsens.

From reverting to online grocery shopping to avoid driving and cycling to work instead - to being relieved they purchased a hybrid car - here’s what different people in the resort had to say.

Paul Cresswell told Grimsby Live: “We’re driving a lot less than we were before because of the prices going up. The further we come this way, it’s gone up and you’re paying more money. We’re just pottering and shopping and only driving when we really have to. The increase in prices does worry me. We were shocked at how much petrol was on the motorway - it was nearly £2 a litre on Monday when we came.”

Andrea Fortune said: “It was £40 to fill the tank up and now it’s gone up to £60 or £70. It concerns me because it makes you think twice about going where you’re going. I’m driving a lot less than I was before and only taking essential trips. We’ve started online grocery shopping and things like that because we have a little bit of a way to the

supermarket - it’s not much but it does mount up when you’re going out a couple of times a week, so we’ve started doing the online shopping because if you choose the off-peak hours, it’s only a couple of quid to get it delivered. The prices just seem to be creeping up and up and up.” Chloe Robinson told Grimsby Live: “I work from home so I don’t travel to work as much but I won’t be driving as much anyway. I’ll bike or walk at any opportunity just to reduce travel. It does worry me about the costs going up because you don’t know when it’s going to stop, it will probably just keep going.”

Diane Robinson added: “I cycle to work a lot but now I’ll be doing it more, even if it’s just carrying my laptop off at work, because of the rising costs of fuel and more traffic congestion.”

Bob McCall said: “The price of it has got nothing to do with us or the government - it’s the world prices. It’s not just our country that is feeling this. The price of fuel naturally gravitates upwards and never downwards.

“If Ukraine was to have peace tomorrow and oil the oil was to be freed, I’d be very surprised if the price of fuel would come down by much.

“My car is a very new car and it’s got an ecosystem on it so if you drive eco, I’m doing about 50 miles to the gallon. If I was still in my old car, the cost of fuel would be drastically more expensive for me. To fill a tank on that used to cost me about £60, so I’m really glad I bought a hybrid.”

Rod Haigh told Grimsby Live: “It hasn’t affected us too much because we don’t do a massive amount of mileage apart from one or two long trips a year, and I’ve always driven economically.

“We’re lucky because we’ve got a reasonable private pension but I feel sorry for people on state pension.”
