Council seeks views on plan to ban cars in parts of Cleethorpes to attract more visitors
BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS URGED TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON PROPOSED TRANSPORT HUB IN GRIMSBY
RESIDENTS will have a say on new plans to ban cars from part of Cleethorpes and major transport moves in Grimsby.
Council chiefs say they want to hear residents’ views on the bids to Government for multi-million grants to enhance the area and attract more visitors to Cleethorpes and Grimsby town centre.
The post-Brexit Levelling Up Fund could see big sums of money earmarked for North East Lincolnshire and planners want people to have their say.
Around 3,000 people have commented on the Cleethorpes Masterplan and Grimsby town centre plans.
Now officials are about to submit bids for Government cash for major projects. Among them is the vision to enhance Pier Gardens and the resort’s Market Place.
Hundreds told the consultation for the Cleethorpes Masterplan that they enjoy the gardens as a leisure space, often using it to sit and enjoy the views whilst having some food.
Respondents also said that more seating and planting schemes that improved biodiversity would encourage them to visit the gardens more.
The Sea Road development site, which formerly had Waves and Submarine pub, has planning permission in place for a new building and the opportunity for a third-party operator to manage the upper floors of the building is still being marketed.
The building, as proposed, will also include resort information facilities and public toilets on the ground floor and a hub for the Beach Safety Team.
Planners aim to reduce traffic in Cleethorpes Market Place. Residents said they wanted to see space for alfresco-style dining, as well as a regular market and more street trees and greenery.
Initial designs in the Masterplan showed concept designs to pedestrianise the area and provide facilities for leisure use to enhance the offering from local businesses.
Further engagement, particularly with businesses, will be carried out should this bid be successful, to finetune the designs.
Suggestions for regeneration of the North Prom are also being studied with families urging councillors to invite leisure businesses to build an indoor trampoline park and play areas for children.
In Grimsby, residents said they wanted more green spaces and areas in which to sit and relax.
The Grimsby LUF bid will support further development of the leisure element of the Future High Streets Fund, to include Riverhead Square as a community meeting place, better use of the waterfront, and more leisure opportunities. An announcement about Riverhead Square is expected soon.
A fit for purpose new Transport Hub in Grimsby town centre will form the core of the transport bid.
As reported, North East Lincolnshire Council has already acquired land on Osborne Street/
Garden Street. Abbey Walk multistorey car park is due to undergo a refit. With Grimsby Town Railway Station and the multi-storey car park right next door, the site has the potential to be turned into a new transport hub.
Other projects planned are electrification of buses and repair of the A180 bridge infrastructure.
Business and residents will be asked to send their views to North East Lincolnshire Council and to their council representatives.
